An Overview of Your Four Wheel Drive System

Four wheel drive systems (4WD), enable all of your wheels to spin simultaneously. All vehicles equipped with 4WD have a transfer case between the front and rear axles that prevents the axles of your vehicle from spinning at different speeds. Essentially, 4WD is like a communication device for your vehicle! This allows your vehicle better traction and maximum torque in order to maintain traction (and your safety!)

There are, of course, different variations and configurations that exist. Because of this, each variation has different benefits for your driving needs! Here’s just a sample of what you can expect from different mechanisms:

  • Locking differential: both wheels on the axle will turn simultaneously
  • Limited-slip differential: detects slide or slip in one wheel, and sends matching torque to the other to maintain traction.
  • Manual hub: requires the driver to manually engage the front wheel drive mechanisms in order to fulyl enter four wheel drive.
  • Automatic hub: you guessed it! This will automatically engage your 4WD system, making it easier to think about the drive ahead!
